Please read the below information if you are the victim of a cryptocurrency related financial crime such as a theft or scam.
Information:
If you are the victim of a crypto theft or scam obtain the following information for each transaction that removed cryptocurrency from your non-custodial wallet or crypto exchange account, whether you sent it as part of a scam or it was stolen from you (first four items are so crypto-capable law enforcement can get a jump on tracing):
- receiving wallet address (address crypto was sent to)
- transaction hash if you have it
- type of crypto stolen; i.e. Bitcoin (BTC), Tether (USDT), Stellar (XLM), etc.
- date of transaction
- amount of crypto stolen (amount of crypto, not just equivalent dollar amount)
- if this was a Bitcoin ATM scam, the location of the Bitcoin ATM and/or the name of the Bitcoin ATM company (i.e. Bitcoin Depot, Coinhub, Cryptobase, etc)
- if the scammers provided you with a QR code to scan at a Bitcoin ATM, screen shot it or save it to your device to share with law enforcement
- if this was an investment scam; name/web address of fake investment website that you thought you were sending crypto to
- if this was a romance scam; method of first meeting the romance scammer, name of social media/dating site or app you met them on plus their user/profile name
- any names the scammers provided you with and pretended to be
- any notifications that you received from the crypto exchange that you had your crypto stolen from
- any phone numbers provided to you by the scammers
- any chat logs between you and the scammer than you are able to save
- any voice messages sent by scammer
- any email addresses and emails between you and the scammer
- any other information you think is relevant
Steps:
Next, make a crime report to these three places if you live in the United States of America and provide them with the above information:
- Your local law enforcement department
- FBI Internet Crimes Complaint Center at ic3.gov
- Use Google to search for the United States Secret Service Field Offices (or just click here USSS Field Offices), find the office that covers the area where you live, call them to make a report
For victims living outside of the United States of America, I will add international reporting contacts as they are obtained but until then, obtain the information in the top list and at least report to your local law enforcement.
Try to copy/paste the receiving wallet address and transaction hash information to law enforcement. Screen shots (photos) will work but copy/paste is way better.
If you do the things above as soon as you realize that you have been the victim of a crypto theft or scam, you will be drastically ahead of the game. Recovery of your stolen cryptocurrency is never guaranteed and, in fact, recovery is not the norm. However, if you do not report it you have zero chance of a recovery.
Remember, only law enforcement can attempt a potential recovery but even then, the stars have to align so set your expectations accordingly. There are some reputable private companies out there who assist with the asset tracing portion and recovery consulting (guiding you in reporting to law enforcement). However, be very skeptical of any private company who promises a recovery or wants to charge you thousands of dollars to trace your stolen or scammed cryptocurrency. I would advise you to report your incident ASAP to the agencies listed above after you have gathered the information from the top list.
This site is for information only. No certain outcome for your individual specific unique incident is guaranteed even if you follow the above steps. There is no guarantee that following the above steps will recover any past loss or stop any future loss. This site is designed to provide important information to victims of cryptocurrency related financial crimes such as thefts or scams. This is also not an all inclusive list. Gather the above information and take the above steps ASAP, yes. However, each situation is unique and additional information may be required by law enforcement after your initial report.
